The weapons could allow Pyongyang to strike U.S. bases in Japan

Recent and apparently successful test launches of ballistic missilesfrom North Korean submarines has Seoul fearing the weapons may be deployed within months or even weeks.
The Korea Times says South Korean officials “underestimated” Pyongyang’s ability to launch such weapons, which have a range that could theoretically allow them to strike U.S. bases in Japan, as well as target all of South Korea.
The paper quotes Yang Uk, a senior researcher at the Korea Defense and Security Forum, as speculating that the missiles were “in the final stage of preparation for deployment.”

President Park Geun-hye warned Wednesday of North Korea’s increasingly “tangible” military threats to the south, the Korea Times said.
North Korea’s test launches came on Wednesday, two days after the U.S. and South Korea began their 12-day Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercises, which have prompted North Korean threats of retaliation.
Tensions have been particularly high on the Korean Peninsula since Seoul unveiled plans to deploy the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) antimissile system, provoking a furious response from Pyongyang.
